2026 First-time officer work shop
A workshop was held in January 2026 with the purpose of facilitating the smooth adaptation of newly hired officers to the company and cultivating their basic qualities as ship officer and engineer.
The workshop began with opening messages from the President and Executive Director, providing a meaningful opportunity to share the company's vision and messages about the roles and responsibilities expected of ship officer and engineer.. This was followed by presentations from Master and Chief Engineers who conducted practical lectures on job training based on actual vessel operation experience, safety management, and overall life on board.
This workshop was a meaningful time that provided practical assistance to newly hired officers in preparing for their future duties at sea.
Good Seamanship
President Captain Nam Sang Yong
The workshop began with an opening message from President Captain Nam Sang Yong of Dongji Maritime Co., Ltd.
Focusing on the roles and responsibilities of Third Officers and Third Engineers, he conveyed the importance of clearly recognizing one's duty as a marine engineer and approaching assigned tasks with sincerity.
He particularly emphasized that responsible judgment and action are fundamental to safe navigation, emphasizing the attitude that marine engineers must possess.
Basic Manners as Fresh Officer & Understanding LNGC Field
Executive Director Captain Shin Ja Yeong
This presentation focused on explaining the basic etiquette and work attitude that must be possessed as a new officer, as well as matters to be mindful of during life on board.
It also helped provide an overall understanding of the field characteristics and work environment of LNG Carriers (LNGC), and emphasized enabling new officers to clearly recognize their roles and responsibilities.
Through this, the importance of the good attitude and cultivation of professionalism as a new officer was conveyed.
Self-Leader (Self-Leadership)
Captain Park Hosung
This lecture explained the concept of self-leadership, where one must first manage and take responsibility for oneself before leading others as a marine engineer, and emphasized the importance of establishing standards for one's own actions and judgment from the time of being a new officer.
It also emphasized that a proactive attitude of assessing situations and preparing independently rather than waiting for instructions serves as the foundation not only for safe navigation but also for onboard teamwork and smooth communication.
Through this lecture, participants gained an opportunity to once again recognize the importance of self-reflection and continuous self-development for growth as marine engineers.
On-board Life as Junior Officer
Captain Park Hosung
He emphasized the importance of effectively utilizing the training period with a positive mindset and proactive attitude, and shared that familiarization with onboard manuals and understanding of basic duties form the foundation for smooth adaptation.
He also emphasized that the attitude of actively learning tasks through good communication and asking for help when necessary is an important factor in the growth of junior marine engineers.
The Basic attitude of the duty officer and the navigation with the equipment (Deck Part)
Captain Kim Donghee
This covered the basic attitude and sense of responsibility that must be possessed as a duty officer, as well as the understanding and utilization methods of major navigation equipment.
Additionally, he shared the company SMS that newly appointed Third Officers must familiarize themselves with before boarding, priorities when performing duties, and the attitude needed to effectively adapt to practical work.
Preparation and Plan as a Third Engineer (Engine Part)
Chief Engineer Hong Seongbeom
Chief Engineer Hong Seongbeom emphasized to the new officers that they should set clear goals, do their best in everything, steadily develop their own abilities, and reflect on mistakes but not stay stuck on regrets. He particularly recommended long-term service on board, and based on his own experience as a Third Engineer, explained that having the right mindset equipped with responsibility, humility, and teamwork in the early stages of boarding is important.
Introduction to Being a Deck Officer at MOL : Company Rules and Practical & Actual Work (Deck Part)
LNGC Inspector C/O KIM DAEGYEOM
This lecture focused on explaining the company regulations and basic operational principles that must be thoroughly understood as a deck officer belonging to MOL, emphasizing that regulatory compliance is a core element directly linked to safe navigation.
Additionally, based on the actual workflow and practical cases of the LNG carrier deck department, it specifically introduced the major tasks and precautions that new officers will encounter in the field.
In particular, it explained the differences between theory and actual work, such as documentation, watchkeeping duties, and onboard reporting systems, emphasizing the importance of field-oriented thinking and practical response capabilities.
Through this lecture, participants established an opportunity to enhance their understanding of duties and practical adaptation abilities required as MOL Deck Officers.
How to be a ‘Work-Smart’ Officer (Engine Part)
LNGC Inspector 1/E Yang Yeongcheol
It covered the key points to check when reviewing drawings and manuals as an engineer and the importance of record management.
Furthermore, in accordance with MOL policy, it emphasized the importance of accident analysis and identifying root causes for prevention based on the premise that accidents can occur at any time, and shared that ambiguous work methods or formal recurrence prevention measures should be avoided.
It also conveyed the basic attitude and importance of collaboration for smooth onboard life along with precautions when preparing documents.
